The Return of tt&t

Faithful Listeners,

After almost two years of silence on the airwaves, I bring good news! Turbow Talk & Tunes returns!

As a college senior with more time and a desire to return to the station, I am able to revive tt&t for this final semester of my time at Yale. I'm very excited about it.

I was just in the station yesterday for re-uppance training, and learned how to use all the new exciting technology that they have there. This includes, ever-so-importantly, new computers and new software, which will hopefully not eat my shows like before. The other big change is that wybc is now largely online, and tt&t will no longer be gracing the radio airwaves, but rather the internet airwaves on www.wybcx.com.

My new time is every other Thursdays at 5:00, starting next week (February 4, 2010). Get excited about new segments, great music, and hearing about all the interesting people on our campus and the things they care about!

Acknowledging that that time is not good for everyone, I will try to post links to previous episodes on this blog. The links will connect to google docs, and you will have to download the episode (unfortunately, it's kind of complicated to make them streaming or embedded. Or maybe it isn't and I'm just a dope). The files may be too large for google docs to scan them for viruses, but I hope that you'll trust that they come straight from my itunes and won't be bad for your computer.

To practice, here are links to the first and second episodes of the show when it first aired in spring 2008. I hope you enjoy them.

If you're interested in contributing to the show, please get in touch with me ASAP! Anyone -- literally anyone -- can be on the show. I would love, love, love to have you, and showcase your talent.

Talk soon,
Sarah

The American Songbook

Hi Everyone!

Thanks so much for listening two weeks ago. And apologies for last week -- the computer decided to eat the final show 10 minutes before air. The show intended for last week will be on tomorrow, tweaked for timeliness. For those of you who want to know more about tt&t's first episode -- The American Songbook -- here's the playlist (that is, the songs and the people in the segments chronologically)

Conversation Starter: Yours truly on Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man
Song: Mr. Tambourine Man; Bob Dylan; Bob Dylan Live 1966: The Royal Albert Hall Concert
Song: A Fine Romance; Billie Holiday; First Issue: Great American Songbook
Tung in Cheek: Margaret Tung on street art
Song: The Only Living Boy in New York; Simon and Garfunkel; Bridge over Troubled Waters
Song: America the Beautiful; 'Keb 'Mo; Big Wide Grin
See You 'Round Campus: News summary and Interview with Meg Evans on study abroad
Serbin Speak and Sound: Rebecca Serbin on the sophomore slump, television, etc.
Song: The Man of Metropolis Steals our Hearts; Sufjan Stevens; Illinoise
Song: You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When you Go; Madeleine Peyroux; Careless Love

If you missed the show (or any show for that matter), I'm looking for ways to put streaming archives on this blog -- they'll be on WYBC's website eventually. In the meantime, shoot me an email at turbowtalktunes@gmail.com and I'll try to burn a CD for you (with not-great sound quality, but it's the best we've got).

Hope you listen tomorrow! It's going to be a great show -- Conversation Starter by Abby McCartney, a report on a Master's Tea with J.D. Salinger's Son by Amanda Glassman, and the Purple Crayon doing audio improv.

Happy Listening,
Sarah

Awesome Websites (and a book)

Hi friends,

In preparation for tt&t's launch, I've found myself on these two websites a lot:

1. www.thislife.org, especially the section entitled "submissions" which has great links about how to make radio great. From the great Ira Glass.

2. www.npr.org/music, which is NPR's recently launched music website. It's excellent.

Also, speaking of Ira Glass (get used to it!) he and Jessica Abel wrote a wonderful (comic) book called "Radio...an Illustrated Guide" which is extremely helpful and informative and exciting -- although it may be a bit outdated, since it was written in 1999.

That's all from Brooklyn. See you 'round.

Segments

Hi all! I'm stuck at Denver International Airport, so I thought I would update you on a few segments that I hope will make regular appearances on tt&t.

Right now I am looking for people who would like to make one-time or even regular contributions to the following segments:

Conversation Starter
This is the segment that will kick off the show. It will be from a member of the community on a piece of music that has affected them in some way -- whether it reminds them of a place, a person, a time in their life, or any other thing. The central theme of the segment will be one that we will return to throughout the show. The contributer will pre-record the segment and provide the song, and have an opportunity to discuss the theme and the show with me.

Radio Post-It
This segment is similar to NPR's Radio Postcard. Basically, it is a 5- to 7-minutes story or set of observations with a strong emphasis on place or event. It should be heavy on audio and should make us feel like we are experiencing the place or event with you. This can be done on an entirely freelance basis.

See you 'Round Campus
One part of See you 'Round Campus will be a summary of campus news from that week. The other part will be an interview, coverage of an event on campus, or a profile of a student. This second part can (and ideally should) be done by listeners.

Live from the Studio
Any and all musical performances by campus groups. If you're interested in getting your group on the air, please contact the show!

Short Story
This segment will allow writers to read their work on the air. It will sometimes be followed by an interview with the author

Play:Plays
This segment will provide a place for playwrights to have their work performed on the air and for actors to perform on the air. Playwrights should be conscious of whether or not the play is appropriate for the radio -- that is, without visual elements.

Again, as always. If you are interested in contributing to any of these segments, please email the show at turbowtalktunes@gmail.com
